The IWSC, which describes itself as the world’s largest and most influential spirits awards, has over 50 years of experience evaluating wine and spirits. Each year the competition receives entries from over 90 countries worldwide. When reviewing spirits, the IWSC’s world-renowned judges follow an impartial, structured and rigorous tasting process that ensures the focus remains entirely on the quality of the liquid. The best performers in the spirits awards are eligible for the IWSC’s most prestigious awards, the Producer Trophies.

“From the outset, the cornerstone of our brand has been an unwavering commitment to crafting the highest-quality agave spirits, and we are thrilled to receive this sought-after recognition,” said Mike Dolan, Co-Founder of Altos Planos. “From the rich and complex taste profiles of our spirits, to our sustainability-related initiatives, to our work to give back to local communities, we have tried to build brands that not only inspire those who love agave spirits, but encourage the industry to prioritise these values as well. For us, these awards are further evidence that it’s possible to make a great product and do it responsibly, both for the planet and for our fellow human beings.”

Altos Planos launched its first spirits brand, Mijenta Tequila, in September 2020, and officially released its second, Tres Tribus Mezcal, in 2023. Altos Planos, including both Mijenta and Tres Tribus, has been a certified B Corporation since August 2022, and was the first agave spirits producer to earn this accolade.

Mijenta is an award-winning, additive-free, sustainable tequila created using fully mature Blue Weber agave from the highlands of Jalisco, a region renowned for its rich red clay soil and unique microclimate. Designed by renowned Maestra Tequilera Ana Maria Romero, Mijenta achieves its distinctive flavor profile through a meticulously slow process and traditional methods, ranging from the selection of agaves from the best plots, to rich fermentation of slow cooked agaves to delicate distillation in pot stills.

Tres Tribus is a small batch artesanal mezcal from the remote mountains of Oaxaca, hand-crafted by fifth generation mezcalero Juan Antonio Coronel. Using time-honored processes and pristine mountain water from the nearby Tidaá volcano aquifer, Tres Tribus elevates the unique profiles of wild foraged agave. Tres Tribus currently offers four expressions, including Espadín Capon, Tobalá, Cuishe and Ensamble.
