DataLase, a global leader in laser-reactive technologies, has announced a product collaboration with Nordson Industrial Coating Solutions (ICS), a specialist in advanced precision technology systems, to accelerate the development and deployment of sustainable, spray-applied laser marking solutions for bottles and containers.

The collaboration combines DataLase’s proprietary laser-reactive coatings with Nordson’s precision spray technology, enabling brands to replace traditional labels with direct-to-pack laser imaging. Visitors to Metpack, taking place in May in Essen, Germany, will be able to see the technology via samples on the Nordson ICS stand in Hall 3, Stand B17. A representative from DataLase will be visiting the stand during the exhibition to meet with customers and partners to discuss collaborative opportunities.

The system works by applying a thin layer of DataLase’s laser-reactive coating to the surface of a container using Nordson’s precision spray equipment. Once applied, the coated surface can be activated using a laser marking system to generate permanent, high-contrast images directly on the pack. This enables graphics, QR codes, date codes, nutritional information and other variable data to be produced during the packaging process without the need for separate printed labels. The technology can be applied to a wide range of container materials, including plastic, metal, glass and paper.

A key challenge for DataLase was identifying a coating application method capable of delivering a highly uniform layer across containers of different shapes and materials while operating at production-line speeds. Several technologies were evaluated, including inkjet systems, but these were rejected due to their complexity, footprint and maintenance requirements. Nordson’s spray technology was selected for its ability to deliver consistent coating deposition using compact equipment that can be readily integrated into packaging lines. Trials carried out using a Nordson test rig confirmed that the spray-applied coating provides the uniform surface required for high-resolution laser imaging, including graphics, serialisation codes, QR codes and date-lot information.

By eliminating analogue pre-printed labels, brands can significantly reduce paper, film and ink consumption at the point of production while simplifying packaging supply chains and improving recyclability. The compact footprint of the spray equipment also supports straightforward in-line integration without compromising production speeds.

Ally Grant, CTO of DataLase, said: “Nordson’s spray technology has been instrumental in advancing our laser-reactive coating solutions. Their equipment has delivered the robustness, consistency and ease of use required to demonstrate the full potential of label-free packaging to global brands. As sustainability becomes central to packaging innovation, this partnership enables us to promote a scalable, high-performance alternative to traditional labels.”
